SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University women's cross country team placed 2nd overall out of 14 teams, the best finish in LTU history, in the Great Lakes invitational on October 20 in the 5k White Division.
LTU had an amazing day in Grand Rapids, Mich. with Marissa Bradley (SR/Haslett, Mich.) coming in 13th place out of 108 other runners with a time of 20:17.50. Right behind her were Hailey Catania (FR/Clarkston, Mich.) who placed 21th with a time 20:48.70 and Monica Ellicott (SR/Caro, Mich.) who placed 22nd with a time of 20:51 flat. Only a few spots back was Michelle Meister (SO/Hoffman Estates, Ill) with a time of 21:09.80 placing 25th. Emily Gandolfi (JR/McBain, MI) finished 38th with a time of 21:40.60. These times were also considered very good due to severe weather, including hail before and during the race.
Coach Eric Green is impressed with his team's results, saying "When you see the results from the training they have done this season go according to plan during the race, it makes it fun for me as a coach. We have one more race left in two weeks which is the most important one of the season. If we place better than 8th at the WHAC championship, it would be the best finish ever for our ladies team in seven years. Hoping that gets capped off with Marissa placing in the top 15, she would become our first ever qualifier to the national meet." They already have had a lot of firsts and records broken this season, but next is their biggest stage yet.
Their next meet, which as mentioned above, is the biggest one thus far of the year for the team as they will be running on the same course they did for the Great Lakes Invitational for the WHAC Championships on November 3. From there, only those who qualify will move on to nationals in Iowa.
