SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball cruised to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-11) win over (RV) Madonna (Mich.) University on Wednesday evening as they continue to sit atop the conference standings at 7-0.
Lawrence Tech (13-1, 7-0) was led by Varvara Gromakova with 11 kills, a .474 hitting percentage, and four aces while Zakia Hunt added nine kills and .467 hitting percentage. Kristi Doherty added 32 assists and two aces to go with eight digs. Isabella McDonald added seven kills followed by Jessica Lodge with five kills.
The Blue Devils cruised to an early 9-4 lead as they went on a 5-0 run after the Crusaders tied the set at 4-4. Lawrence Tech pushed the lead to 17-6 as McDonald and Gromakova had a kill each with Lodge and Hudson adding a block during the 13-2 run. The Blue Devils closed the set out with a kill from Lodge.
Shelby Rasch got things going for the Blue Devils in the second set, giving LTU a 4-0 lead to start. The Crusaders didn't wilt though, fighting back to take the lead at 7-5. However, Lawrence Tech responded with a 14-2 run to go up 19-9. Doherty led the way over the run as she served nine straight winning points with a pair of aces. Hudson, McDonald, and Gromakova each had a pair of kills during the run while Hudson added a solo block. Lawrence Tech closed the set with four straight points including Gromakova sealing the 2-0 lead with a pair of aces to end the set.
Lawrence Tech dug in during the third set, taking a 12-6 lead on a Hudson kill as the Blue Devils went on to take the lead at 24-9. Brittany Taber sealed the 3-0 sweep with a kill off a Doherty set. Lodge, during the final run, won seven straight points off her serve.
The Blue Devils hit the road on Friday, Oct. 4 as they travel to Lima, Ohio to face University of Northwestern Ohio. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EDT.
