SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team swept the opening day of the 2019 Gray Wolf Invitational on Friday, September 6. The Blue Devils defeated West Virginia Tech 3-0 and Grace (Ind.) College 3-0 to open the weekend 2-0.
Lawrence Tech (5-1) cruised to an opening day win over West Virginia Tech as they took the first set 25-14 behind a .360 hitting percentage. In the second set of the day, the Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead with another 25-14 win. They wrapped the match up with a 25-22 win in set three to sweep the opening match of the invitational 3-0.
The Blue Devils finished the match with a .246 hitting percentage to go with 45 kills and 17 errors. Kristi Doherty had 35 assists while Zakia Hunt led in kills with 11. Shelby Rausch had a team high 16 digs while Isabella McDonald and Jessica Lodge added seven kills each.
In the second match of the day, Lawrence Tech defeated Grace 3-0 as they won the first set 27-25 followed by 25-19 in the second set and 25-21 in the third set. The Blue Devils hit .223 from the floor and finished with 45 kills as Hunt finished with 13 kills and Gromakova added 12. Gromakova had a team high .400 hitting percentage while Nichole Hyduk and Rausch added 16 digs each. Doherty finished the match with 37 assists.
Lawrence Tech returns to the court on Saturday, September 7 when they wrap up the Gray Wolf Invitational at 9 a.m. against Shawnee State (Ohio).
