BELLEVUE, Neb. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University swept their season opening match 3-0 against Peru State and followed with a 3-1 win over Doane on the opening day of the 2019 GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic.
Lawrence Tech (2-0) started the season with a 25-23 set one win as they hit .256 from the floor while holding Peru State to a .093. In the second set, the Blue Devils struggled from the floor as they hit .161 but was able to topple Peru 25-20. They sealed the win with the best hitting set of the day, finishing the set with .412 hitting percentage.
Zakia Hunt led the way with 11 kills and a .529 hitting percentage while Isabella McDonald added 10 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Kristi Doherty finished with 31 assists and two kills. Claire Cudney led the way for Peru State with seven kills and eight digs.
In the second match of the day, the Blue Devils defeated Doane (Neb.) University 3-1 as Lawrence Tech as Hunt hit .423 with 13 kills and a block. The Blue Devils dropped the first set 25-23, but battled back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 28-26 set two win. Lawrence Tech followed that up with a 25-17 and 25-11 wins to take the match 3-1.
The Blue Devils hit a program best .500 in the fourth set as they had 16 kills to just one error. Multiple Blue Devils finished the match with over 10 kills including Kristi Dohert who had 12 kills and 35 assists with 15 digs. Madeline Hudson added six kills in her first day as a Blue Devil. The forced Doane into 20 errors on 164 attacks for a paltry .177 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils return to the court on Saturday, August 31 when they face McPherson at 10 a.m. followed by Central Methodist at 2 p.m.
