Women's Soccer Makes History by Moving into WHAC Semifinals for First Time as a Program with 2-1 Win Against Cornerstone; Play Aquinas in Semis on Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University women's soccer team made history and sealed their ticket to the WHAC conference semifinals with a double overtime thriller versus Cornerstone University (Mich.), where they beat the Golden Eagles 2-1 on Wednesday night. This night is historic as it is the first time that the women's soccer team has ever made it this far in the WHAC.

The first half, 12 minutes in, Lawrence Tech found the back of the net by the foot Dahlia Jerovsek with an assist by Madison Bologna. However, only seconds later following kickoff, the Golden Eagles found the back of the net by strong foward Alexys Riksen, who scored all three goals in their regular season match up versus LTU.

The rest of the half was very quiet, with LTU dominating the shot selection, shooting nine compared to the Golden Eagles three. What was a stark difference from their first meet up was that the Blue Devils limited Riksen to only one goal instead on going on a scoring streak. Either side's keepers did not see too many saves, as shots went off posts or were wide throughout the first.

In the second, the game was quiet again, yet with LTU shooting six to Cornerstone's four. Both the Golden Eagles and the Blue Devils only had one corner kick. Despite this, Lawrence Tech had five fouls in the second alone. The game remained scoreless and the teams went into overtime.

The first overtime saw the Golden Eagles up the ante with three shots compared to LTU's two. Yet, each team was fierce and held each other at 1-1.

Going into double overtime, only 27 seconds in, Sidney McClay kicked the game winner in with an assist off Katelyn Mather following a deflected goal, end the game with Lawrence Tech making history with the 2-1 win and moving to the WHAC semifinals.

Up next, the Blue Devils go on the road on November 9th to face the number two team in the conference, Aquinas College, who won their quarterfinal match up. When the Saints and the Blue Devils last met, Aquinas beat LTU 1-0. This game was rather physical, with a red card being given to either team during the match. The time for this semifinal meet up is TBD, and the winner will go on to face the winner of UNOH and the ongoing winner of the quarterfinal game Madonna versus Siena Heights.
