Blue Devils Upset NO. 8 Spring Arbor Cougars in 3-2 win; Silverman Shines with One goal and One Assist

SOTUHFIELD, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological University women's soccer team came out on fire to topple the No. 8 team in the nation, the Spring Arbor University Cougars (Mich.), with a 3-2 win at home. With the help of back to back goals in the first within a minute of each other, the Blue Devils grabbed the upset, giving the cougars their second loss to an unranked team this season. This is the first win for Lawrence Tech over a top 10 opponent and their first over a top 25 opponent since 2017.

The game started off back and forth with either team trying to get an attempt on net. However, Lawrence Tech (4-2-0) struck first off a corner kick at the 26:55 mark set up by Alayne Nyboer to the foot of Laura Silverman, her third of the season. Then, immediately following kickoff, Another goal was dialed in, this time from Aiyana Reid, assisted by Katelyn Mather at the 27:33 mark. While Spring Arbor (4-3-1) attempted to find their footing for the remainder of the half, they came up short. Despite the many attempts by the Blue Devils to add to the mix, Cougar goalie Emily Ponstein stood her ground in the back field making four stops, two of which were point blank.

Opening the second half, the Cougars came out with their heads high looking to climb back onto the scoreboard. They did so in the first minute of the game off a penalty kick goal by Mackenzie Selvuis to the right of Blue Devil goalie Rebecca Almandoz. Despite this, the Blue Devils responded only six minutes later with another goal, pushing their lead back to two with a goal from freshman Dahlia Jerovsek and an assist from Laura Silverman. Again, the game was tight in the beginning of the half, with plenty of fouls from either bench, but Spring Arbor earned their next goal, in the 61st minute of play with a goal from Alyvia Thorne assisted by Morgan Marshall.

While the ball bounced around in either ends of the field, including a few tight minutes on the Blue Devils penalty box towards the end of the match, the horn sounded in a 3-2 decision with the LTU team rushing the field.

Up next for the Blue Devils is their first Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference match of the season against Rochester College (Mich.). They play the Warriors at home on Wednesday, September 25th at 7:30 p.m.
