Opening the 2019 season, the Lawrence Technology University women's soccer team fell on the road against Indiana University-East on Sunday, August 25, 2019. IUE dominated the majority of the game, with several shots on net to start the game, including 10 shots alone in the first half, two of which went beyond LTU's defenses. The Blue Devils move to 0-1 on the season.
A quiet first half from the Lawrence Tech sideline resulted in the deficit of one goal in the 17th minute of regulation from Indiana East. Only minutes later did the Red Wolves score again, resulting in the remainder of the 71 minutes to be scoreless from either side.
Newcomer Dahlia Jerovsek led the team in shots with three, while right behind her was veteran Katelyn Mather with two. Rebekah Holbrook, Alayne Nyboer, Randi Jannette, and Laura Silverman all got a shot off on goal during the match, yet were denied by IUE keeper Gabby Mitchum. On the other side of the field, Rebecca Almandoz had eight stops, with four in each half.
Both teams heard many whistles as East grabbed 22 fouls, while LTU had six yellow cards throughout the match. Despite Lawrence Tech finding speed towards the final minutes, including an on target shot from Jannette, the Red Wolves came out on top with the 2-0 win.
Next up for the Blue Devils is their home opener against Rio Grande (Ohio) on Friday, August 30th at 7:30 pm on the LTU Athletic Field. The Red Storm are 0-2 with losses from The University of the Cumberlands (Ky) and Indiana Wesleyan University earlier this month coming into this match in Southfield, Mich.
