SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's lacrosse team fell to Indiana Tech 14-11 in the WHAC Tournament Championship game on Saturday, April 27 in Fort Wayne, Ind. The win moves
Lawrence Tech (10-8) took the early 1-0 lead with a goal from Ashley Sherry, but Indiana Tech stormed back to score five straight goals to go up 5-1 with 12:03 left in the first half. Anna Gagnon scored the next two goals to cut the lead to 5-3 on assists from Sherry. Indiana Tech came back to score with 3:16 left in the half, retaking a three goal lead, 6-3, on a goal from Abby Barkdull. However, the Blue Devils' Abbey Smentowski got that goal back, heading to the break 6-4.
The second half was all Warriors as they scored eight of the first nine goals to take a 14-5 lead with 14:15 remaining in the game, but a quick 4-0 run by the Blue Devils cut it to 14-9 with 5:19 left. Kaylee Patterson and Teagan Laier started the run with assists from Gabi Larkin. Gagnon scored the next two goals over a 20 second period to make it 14-9.
Patterson and Laier added two late goals to cut it to 14-11, but the clock was not on their side, as they fell in the championship game 14-11.
The Warriors were able to hold off the Blue Devils down the stretch to win the WHAC Tournament and earn an automatic berth to the 2019 NAIA National Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich., May 7-11. Lawrence Tech now waits to see if they earn an at-large bid to the invitational.
