AVE MARIA, Fla. - After a five game losing streak, the Lawrence Technological University women's lacrosse team won their first game of the season 18 - 5 on the road against the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (Fla.). Next up for the Blue Devils is a trip back home before heading into an away game against Walsh University on Tuesday, March 16.
Leading the team in points was Anna Gagnon (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.), Teagan Laier(SO/Howell, Mich.). and Gabi Larkin (JR/South Lyon, Mich.). Gagnon had four goals and two ground balls while Laier had three goals and an assist. Laier also grabbed five draw controls. Larkin led the team in assists with four and in draw controls with five. She also had four ground balls. Kaylee Patterson (SO/Grand Blanc, Mich.) went 100% in her shooting percentage, scoring all three of her three shot attempts. She also grabbed two ground balls and had one draw control.
On defense, Dorie Coggin (SO/Hamilton, Ohio) led the team in ground balls with six and had eight saves by the end of the game. In front of her was Abby Barnewold (SO/Lake Orion, Mich.) with five ground balls and four draw controls. The Blue Devil defense had several key stops that turned into goals throughout their match with the Gyrenes.
The game started off close, with Lawrence Tech's (1-5) Gagnon scoring first with an assist from Larkin in the first three minutes of the game. The Gyrenes (2-4) responded right back, however, this fueled the Blue Devils enough to not let Ave Maria score again in the first. Lawrence Tech scored 12 more times before the end of the half, with three back to back goals from Patterson and two back to back goals from Smentowski. A handful of others chipped in before the end of the half.
The next half saw Laier scoring two goals within the first five minutes of the period. While AMU found the back fo the net twice after this, Lawrence Tech extended their lead to 17-3 with a goal from Katja Nuler (JR/Canton, Mich.) and Kady Waits (FR/Milford, Mich.). Another goal from the Gyrenes occurred before LTU scored their first assisted goal of the half, coming from Gagnon with an assist from Larkin, sealing the game with an 18-5 win.
Walsh University is 5-1 this season with a recent 21-4 win against West Virginia Wesleyan. The Blue Devils and the Cavaliers play at 5 p.m. in North Canton, Ohio on March 19th.
