SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team defeated Cornerstone (Mich.) University 83-52 on Wednesday, February 13 to close the home regular season schedule with an 11-4 record.
The Blue Devils (20-8, 12-6) opened the game with a 16-3 run as Teryn Kline (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Kaitlyn Smith (JR/Holly, Mich.) combined for four three-pointer's. Cornerstone was able to cut the lead to 11, 18-7, with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter. However, Lawrence Tech was just too much for the Golden Eagles, extending the lead to 23, 30-12, with 1:22 remaining in the first.
Lawrence Tech took a 40-15 lead three-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter. Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) scored five of her 18 points to open the quarter. She started the third quarter with her third three-pointer to push the lead to 19 points after Cornerstone opened the half with a three of their own.
Cornerstone (2-27, 1-18) closed the game to within 14 points with just over four minutes into the quarter, but Lawrence Tech's strong defensive effort stymied their run. The Blue Devils quickly made it 64-44 after a pair of free-throws from Buckingham, who went 11-for-11 from the line. She is now 27-for-27 over her past three games.
The Blue Devils headed to the fourth quarter with a 21-point lead as they closed the game out 83-52 after winning the fourth 18-8. Buckingham finished the game with her 14th double-double of the season, 28 points and 10 rebounds with four assists and three steals. Kaitlyn Smith and Kendall Fisher (FR/Indianapolis, Ind.) each added 12 points while Teryn Kline added nine points. Rachel Price (JR/Springboro, Ohio) finished the game with seven points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
The Blue Devils head to Lima, Ohio on Saturday, February 16 to face University of Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m.
