ADRIAN, Mich.- The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's hoops fell 60-57 to (RV) Siena Heights (Mich.) University on Wednesday, January 16 at the SHU Field House in Adrian, Michigan. Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) scored in double-figures for the 20th time this season as she led the charge with 16 points and eight boards.
Lawrence Tech (16-6, 8-4) battled back from their first quarter shooting woes to knock down 36.4 percent from the field. The Blue Devils scored 12 points off 13 turnovers by the Saints.
Buckingham shot 5-for-12 from the field and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe, and recorded one block and three steals. Kendall Fisher (FR/Indianapolis, Ind.) led the squad in assists as she dished out four in 40 minutes of action. She also recorded a team-high four steals and contributed with 14 points. Rachel Price (JR/Springboro, Ohio) led the Blue Devils with two blocks.
Siena Heights (16-5, 9-3) shot 33.9 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from three-point range. Demi Russell led the Saints, scoring 15 points by going 6-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line. Sharmaine Wills led on the boards, hauling in 10 rebounds.
Lawrence Tech's late comeback started halfway through the third quarter when the team was down by 17 points. Buckingham scored a layup to start a 23-6 run that would tie the game at 55-55 halfway through the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils reclaimed the lead, 57-56, with two minutes to go with a layup by Teryn Kline (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.), but the Saints struck back with a 4-0 run in the last 30 seconds to win the game 60-57.
Much of the first half was a back-and-forth affair with four ties and four lead changes. Buckingham gave Lawrence Tech its first lead of the game when she scored a layup halfway through the second quarter after Kaitlyn Smith (JR/Holly, Mich.) knocked one down from deep to tie the game. However, this was not enough, as the Blue Devils went into the locker room trailing 29-24.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Saturday, January 19, as the team visits third-ranked Indiana Tech (20-1, 12-0) in Fort Wayne, Indiana at 11 a.m.
