SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team defeated Concordia (Mich.) University - Ann Arbor 84-65 on Saturday, January 12 at the Don Ridler Field House.
Lawrence Tech (16-5, 8-3) opened the game scoring nine of the opening 11 points to take a 9-2 lead with 7:25 left in the first quarter. Kendall Fisher (FR/Indianapolis, Ind.), Teryn Kline (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.), and Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) all hit their opening threes to give the Blue Devils the early seven-point lead. Concordia cut the lead to three at 9-6, but the Blue Devils scored seven of the next nine points to extend their lead to 16-8 with 2:45 remaining in the first quarter.
Concordia (4-16, 3-9) got to within six at 18-12, but the Blue Devils closed the first out with a pair of jumpers from Buckingham and Danielle Hanson (JR/East Lansing, Mich.) to take a 22-12 lead into the second quarter. The Blue Devils came out in the second quarter and hit their first three shots and made their free-throws to extend their lead to 14 points, 28-14.
The Cardinals did not fly away though, clamping down on defense and forcing the Blue Devils into turnovers and missed shots as they cut the LTU lead to three points, 35-32 with 3:29 left in the half. Lawrence Tech responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead at 42-32, but Concordia hit one last basket to end the half and make it an eight-point game heading into the break.
Concordia came out of the break on fire, making their first four baskets to take a 43-42 lead and hit the ensuing free-throw to take a two-point lead at 44-42. The Cardinals continued to show grit, hitting a three and taking a two-point lead at 55-53 with 3:04 left in the quarter. Buckingham hit a three with 44 seconds left to give the Blue Devils a 60-58 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Blue Devils started to hit their rhythm in the fourth quarter as they built a nine-point lead, 70-61. Rachel Price (JR/Springboro, Ohio) scored five of the team's opening 10 points as Lawrence Tech did not look back. Buckingham followed with a pair of threes to push the lead to 76-61. Fisher hit a pair of free-throws to make it a 17-point game to preserve the teams eighth win with an 84-65 win over Concordia.
Lawrence Tech was led by senior Nicole Buckingham with 21 points and seven rebounds. She went 3-for-6 from the arc and had seven assists with three steals and a pair of blocks in the win. Kendall Fisher finished the game with 15 points in her first collegiate start. Fisher went 5-for-8 from the field and was perfect from three. Price finished with a season-high 12 points and four rebounds.
The Blue Devils shot 50 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc as the rebounded from a tough loss on Wednesday. Lawrence Tech scored seven second-chance points off eight offensive rebounds and finished with eight steals.
The Blue Devils head to Siena Heights (Mich.) University on Wednesday, January 16 in a matchup of top three teams in the WHAC. Lawrence Tech will look to rebound from the conference opening loss to the Saints on November 1.
