Blue Devils Drop 51-50 Decision at Bulldogs; Buckingham Scores Season-High 31 Points

WILBERFORCE, Ohio.- The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team fell, 51-50, to Wilberforce (Ohio) University on Friday, December 14, at the Gaston Lewis Arena. Senior Guard Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) scored in the double digits for the 12th-straight outing as she recorded a season-high 31 points.

With shooting woes throughout the contest, hitting just 28-percent from the floor, the Blue Devils (11-4, 5-2) relied on its 8-of-19 as a team from three-point territory. Buckingham paced LTU from beyond the arc with a career-high seven three-pointers.

Lawrence Tech (11-4, 5-2) scored 14 second-chance points off 13 offensive rebounds and 13 points off of 16 Wilberforce (5-8, 1-0) turnovers. In addition, LTU won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Bulldogs 37-32.

Buckingham's performance consisted of 10-for-20 from the field and 7-for-9 from deep. She also swiped a game-high five steals. Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.) dished-out a season-high eight assists in 38 minutes of action. Rachel Price (JR/Springboro, Ohio) recorded a team-high two blocks.

Wilberforce shot 42.6 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from three-point land. The Bulldogs were led by Alexandra Shealey's 16 points and seven rebounds. Shealey went 7-of-11 in the contest. Wilberforce finished with three scorers in double figures.

The first quarter saw four lead changes but only 7-of-29 shooting between the two sides, with LTU taking a 10-9 lead into the second.

Buckingham opened the second quarter the same way she opened the game, knocking one down from deep, giving the Blue Devils a four-point lead. Lawrence Tech closed the first half with a 6-0 run over the last minute and a half to take a 29-21 lead into the break.

The largest lead for either side came at the 7:55 mark of the third quarter when Buckingham hit another three, putting LTU up 35-25.

The Bulldogs answered with a 15-8 run to cut the deficit to three points by the end of the third quarter, 43-40.

Just as the first quarter, the fourth was a back-and-forth affair, as the game was tied twice and the lead changed three times. It was in the final 16 seconds that the Bulldogs sealed the win with a jumper by Dameras Whitlock to give Wilberforce the say, 51-50.

Lawrence Tech will be back in action on Friday, December 21, as the Blue Devils host Great Lakes Christian (Mich.) College at the Don Ridler Field House. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
