NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team claimed its third-straight win, knocking off Holy Cross (Ind.) College on Wednesday, December 12 at the McKenna Arena, 60-48. Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) led the charge with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, recording her eighth double-double of the season.
Lawrence Tech (11-3) took the fourth-straight decision in the all-time series against the Saints. The Blue Devils benched outscored Holy Cross', 13-5. In addition, LTU scored 14 points off 13 turnovers by the Saints and capitalized on 10 offensive rebounds with 11 second-chance points.
Buckingham's 24 points consisted of knocking down 8-of-18 from the field, including 3-for-6 from deep. She was followed by Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.), who contributed with 12 points and two steals.
Holy Cross (7-7) finished the game shooting 31.7 percent from the field after struggling from three-point land at 16 percent. The Saints were led by Keysha Streater, who scored 22 points and recorded two steals. Jessica Norris dished out a game-high five assists.
Despite shooting woes and the Saints building an early 13-point advantage, the Blue Devils engineered a comeback and went to the locker room with a 29-27 lead. Once Lawrence Tech took the lead, their second of the game, LTU would not let go of it for the rest of the contest.
Banas and Buckingham kicked the second half open with a jumper apiece within the first three minutes of the third quarter. The buckets sparked a 16-2 run that would let the Blue Devils build a 16-point lead halfway through the quarter.
The Saints went on a short 7-3 run to cut the 16-point deficit to 12. Lawrence Tech closed the quarter with a 48-36 lead, shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 3-for-7 from deep.
The largest lead of the game for the Blue Devils came in the fourth quarter when Banas knocked one down from beyond the arc to give LTU an 18-point advantage. Holy Cross only allowed the Blue Devils to score two points in the remaining two minutes, cutting the edge to 12.
The Blue Devils will be back on the court on Friday, December 14, when they visit Wilberforce (Ohio) University at 5:30 PM.
