SOUTHFIELD, Mich.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team downed 23rd-ranked University of Michigan-Dearborn, 76-67, on Wednesday, December 5, at the Don Ridler Field House. Senior Guard Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 boards.
Kendal Fisher led the Blue Devils with a career-high 21 points. The Indianapolis, Indiana, native leads all freshmen in the WHAC with 14.0 points per game. Fisher's performance consisted of 6-for-15 from the field, including 1-for-2 from beyond the arc. Teryn Kline (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) chipped in a career-high 19 points, knocking down 5-of-6 from downtown. In addition to her double-double, Buckingham recorded team-high six assists and three blocks.
Lawrence Tech (9-3, 4-2) shot 43.5 percent from the field, 35 percent from deep, and hit 15-of-17 from the free throw line. The Blue Devils' bench outscored UM-Dearborn's, 30-10. LTU forced the Wolverines into 12 turnovers that led to eight points and scored 18 points off 15 offensive rebounds.
UM-Dearborn (9-2, 4-1) finished the game shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from beyond the arc. Jeorgia Jones led four Wolverines in double figures with 16 points and four assists.
Lawrence Tech started the game with a 10-2 run before UM-Dearborn knocked down a pair of three-pointers to spark an 8-2 run over the next two minutes. The quarter went back-and-forth with no team mustering more than a six-point lead. As time expired in the opening frame, Jones gave the Wolverines their first lead, 24-21.
UM-Dearborn started off strong in the second, building its lead to eight - its largest of the game. A pair of jumpers from Buckingham and Kline, though, made it 37-33. Lawrence Tech would chip away further to close the half down 40-37.
Two minutes into the third, Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.) tied the game with a jumper to bring the score even at 42. The Blue Devils rattled off a 10-2 run to build an eight point lead late in the quarter.
The Wolverines wouldn't go quietly though, erasing the deficit and taking the one-point advantage, 61-60, with 6:46 to play.
Fisher responded for LTU with back-to-back layups, and Buckingham and Rachel Price (JR/Springboro, Ohio) added two of their own to put Lawrence Tech back on top, 68-61. The Blue Devils would close out the contest going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final 38 seconds to seal the 76-67 decision.
Lawrence Tech will be back on the court on Saturday, December 8, with a visit to Concordia (Mich.) University-Ann Arbor (0-9, 0-6). Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
