Lawrence Tech Defeats Grace College at Leah Whittaker Memorial Invitational

MARION, Ind. - The 21st-ranked Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team defeated Grace (Ind.) College 68-59 at the 2018 Leah Whittaker Memorial Invitational, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan. With this victory, the Blue Devils moved to 5-1 overall.

How it Happened

Kaitlyn Smith (JR/Holly, Mich.) notched the first three points for the Blue Devils within 33 seconds after tip-off. The Lancers struck back 20 seconds later with a two-point field goal. Lawrence Tech and Grace College played a back-and-forth first quarter with one tie and four lead changes. The Blue Devils built a 10-point lead after breaking open a 10-10 tie to close the quarter 20-10 by shooting 42.1 percent from the field.

The Lancers cut Lawrence Tech's lead to 20-15 within the first two minutes of the second quarter. However, the Blue Devils put together a 13-9 run to head into halftime with a solid 33-24. Lawrence Tech outrebounded Grace 12-9 and recorded one assist and three steals in the second quarter. LTU shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half including 6-for-17 from three-point land.

Lawrence Tech pushed the lead to 38-24 with a jumper by Danielle Hanson (JR/East Lansing, Mich.) and a three-point field goal by Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.). Brooke Sugg, Vironnica Drake, Pam Miller and Kamryn Hostetler of Grace College mounted the Lancer comeback with a 19-13 run. However, Lawrence Tech closed the third quarter with a 51-43 lead.

Hanson opened the fourth quarter with three two-point field goals. The first half of this quarter went back-and-forth but Lawrence Tech closed the contest on a 7-3 run in the last two minutes of the game to seal the victory. The Blue Devils shot 7-for-16 from the field in the final quarter including 1-for-6 from beyond the arc and 2-for-6 from the line.

 

Game Trends

-The score was tied only once and the lead changed four times throughout the game.

-Lawrence Tech's largest lead was by 16 points halfway through the second quarter.

-Grace College's largest lead was by three points halfway through the first quarter.

 

Blue Devils by the Numbers

-Buckingham led the team with a double-double as she scored 22 points on 9-for-18 including 3-for-8 from beyond the arc and recorded 14 boards. Additionally, Buckingham had four assists in 38 minutes of action.

-Along with Buckingham, Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.) had a team high four assists. She also recorded 10 rebounds and a team high two steals as she played 33 minutes.

-Rachel Price (Springboro, Ohio) had a team high one block in 12 minutes of action.

-The Blue Devils recorded 16 assists, 19 turnovers, and 6 steals.

-Lawrence Tech finished the game shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 32.1 percent from three-point land and 38.5 percent from the line.


Lancers by the Numbers

-Vironnica Drake led the Lancers 24 points as she shot 11-for-20 including 1-for-6 from beyond the arc.

-Kamryn Hostetler recorded a team high five assists in 35 minutes of action.

-Kaylie Warble had a team high of 10 boards.

-The Lancers recorded 12 assists, 17 turnovers, and 11 steals.

-The team finished the game shooting 32.9 percent from the field, 16.2 percent from three-point land and 41.7 percent from the line.
