Blue Devils Defeat Trailblazers 87-49 in Season Opening Game

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.- The (21) Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) women's basketball team defeated Ohio Christian University 87-49 in season and 2018 LTU Classic opening game this afternoon. The Blue Devils struggled in the first quarter, as both teams were very close to each other in the scoreboard throughout the 10 minutes; it finished with a tied score of 17-17. However, Lawrence Tech took the game by the scruff of the neck for the last three quarters to achieve the win.

The Blue Devils started ahead in the scoreboard as Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.) and Katelyn Smith (JR/Holly, Mich.) scored one basket each within the first minute of the game to give LTU a 4-0 lead. Lawrence Tech led the match by a two to five-point margin throughout the majority of this quarter until the eighth minute, when Staci Dinsmore tied the game 17-17. Teryn Kline (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) was the top scorer for Lawrence Tech in the first quarter after making one 2-point and one 3-point field goals. Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) and Banas were the two Blue Devils with most assists in this quarter, two each.

Rachel Price (JR/Springboro, Ohio) gave the Blue Devils the 19-17 lead once again after making a two-point field goal less than a minute into the second quarter. However, the Trailblazers tied the game 30 seconds later and turned the tables around when Dinsmore scored a free throw after receiving a foul by Pierce. By this time, Ohio Christian led the game 20-19. This was the only point of the game in which the Blue Devils were below in the scoreboard. In the 8:06, Buckingham scored her second 2-point field goal of the game to give the Blue Devils the 21-20 lead. After this, Lawrence Tech dominated the game and finished the second quarter with a 44-23 lead.

The Blue Devils grew their advantage to 52-26 during the first five minutes of the third quarter, as Buckingham scored six points and Banas two. During the second half of this quarter, Danielle Hanson (JR/East Lansing, Mich.), Kendall Fisher (FR/Indianapolis, Ind.), Hope Dollarhide (JR/Dorr, Mich.), Emily Langolf (SO/Macomb, Mich.), and Buckingham were in charge of scoring 17 more points. The Blue Devil defense only allowed the Trailblazers to make two 3-point field goals and one free throw during this quarter and went to the break with a 69-31 lead.

Langolf amplified the scoreboard 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, after making a 3-point field goal. At this point, the score was 72-31. Ohio Christian tried reducing the distance and scored five points within the next two minutes, but was not enough as Blue Devils Alex Ruster (SR/Warren, Mich.) and Smith made one 3-point field goal each in less than a minute. Lawrence Tech achieved the largest lead of the game halfway through the fourth quarter when Ruster scored a 2-point field goal to set the score 80-39. The Trailblazers had another scoring streak in the three minutes that followed in which they scored eight points in a row and set the score 80-47. In the 8:14 mark of this quarter, Smith made a 3-point basket to set the score 83-47 and less than a minute later Helania Limas scored a 2-point field goal for Ohio. However, Ruster and Dollarhide made four points in the last minute of the game to give LTU the final 87-49 lead.

Buckingham was the top scorer for Lawrence Tech with 27 points and had a Field-Goal Percentage of 65. The second highest Blue Devil was Fisher, who scored 13 points and had an FGP of 36. Langolf followed Buckingham and Fisher with 10 points and a Field-Goal Percentage of 50. Langolf was also the player with most assists, seven, followed by Fisher, Buckingham, and Banas with six, five, and four respectively. As a team, Lawrence Tech had a 49.3 FGP, 29.0 3-Point Field-Goal Percentage, and 50 Free-Throw Percentage.

Lawrence Tech will be back on the court tomorrow at 4:00 PM in the Don Ridler Field House to face Point Park University (Pa.). With this game, the Blue Devils will conclude their participation in the 2018 LTU Classic.
