FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team will face off with seventh-ranked Indiana Tech in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals on Saturday, February 23 at 1 p.m. at the Schaefer Center. This is the first time the teams meet in postseason.
Lawrence Tech (22-9, 13-7) finished the WHAC regular season seeded in fifth place, while Indiana Tech (28-3, 18-2) earned No. 1 seed. In the tournament's first round, LTU upset (RV) Siena Heights (Mich.) University (23-8, 15-5), 68-63. The Warriors defeated University of Northwestern Ohio (10-21, 6-14), 64-53.
This is the third meeting between the sides this season. On December 1, the Blue Devils fell to Indiana Tech, 74-64, at the Don Ridler Field House. On January 19, the Warriors defeated Lawrence Tech, 51-45, at the Schaefer Center.
Through 31 games, the Blue Devils have shot 41.2 percent from the field and 35.1 percent from beyond the arc. LTU is ranked fourth in the nation and second in the conference for scoring defense as the team allows 54.3 points per outing and sits third in the WHAC for a scoring average, 71.1 points per game.
Nicole Buckingham (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) paces the squad with 18.8 points per contest, 302 boards, and 56 steals. Rachel Price (JR/Springboro, Ohio) leads Lawrence Tech with 49 blocks, while Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.) averages 3.22 assists per outing.
The Warriors enter the matchup posting 74.2 points per game and allowing 53.9. Indiana Tech has shot 44.5 percent from the field and 37.3 from deep. Kendall Knapke paces the squad with 15.7 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per outing, and 1.6 blocks per contest.
The winner of this matchup will advance to the WHAC Tournament Championship Game against the winner of the contest between Aquinas (Mich.) College (24-7, 16-4) and Rochester (Mich.) College (19-12, 12-8) on Monday, February 25. Time and location are still TBD.
