DETROIT, Mich.- The No. 25 Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team defeated Rochester (Mich.) College in both games of the doubleheader played on Wednesday, April 3 at the Tom Adams Field in Wayne State (Mich.) University. Despite trailing 4-0 at the top of the fourth inning in the first game, the Blue Devils built a comeback to win 6-5 in 10 innings. LTU defeated the Warriors 11-1 in five innings in the second game.
Brittney Bult toed the rubber for Lawrence Tech (22-4, 4-2) in all ten innings of the first game. Bult struck out season-high 11 of the 41 batters she faced and allowed five runs off eight hits and two walks.
Rochester (7-17, 2-4) found an early 1-0 edge in the first inning with a homer by Alexis Evans and pushed the lead to 4-0 at the top of the fourth inning. The Blue Devils used the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to one run. The Warriors added a run in the seventh inning to set a 5-3 lead. Wieland and Kubiak plated Bult and Malburg in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and give LTU a chance. Bult pitched strong eighth, ninth and 10th innings as she only allowed one hit. Banas scored the winning run in the 10th inning off a single by Adams.
Faith Barden pitched for the first three innings the second game. The Coleman, Mich. native allowed one run off four hits and one walk. In addition, Barden struck out three of the 14 batters she faced. Alexa Cherney backed Barden up in the last two innings of the outing and allowed no runs and one hit. Cherney sat down three batters and faced seven.
Sarah Hige, Adams, and Bult set the tone for LTU with two runs apiece. Kennedy Emmons, Brittany Wieland, Katie Kubiak, and Cyster pitched in with a run each. In conference action this season, Kubiak has gone 7-for-8 from the plate. Kubiak registered four RBIs off two hits in this game.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the second game with four runs in the first inning to take the lead and not let it go for the rest of the effort. LTU then scored seven runs in the second inning to push the lead to 11-0 and seal the victory. The lone Warrior run came in the fourth inning to cut the 11-run deficit to 10.
Lawrence Tech caught up with head coach Karen Baird to talk about her team's performance today. Here is what she had to say about it:
"I am very proud of the team's fight in the first game and glad to get the win. We attacked offensively in the second game and I am very happy to see how we came out. Bult pitched a tremendous game one and Kubiak's hits were unbelievable once again. Great team wins today!"
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Thursday, April 4 against the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The doubleheader will take place in Northville HS at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
