CLERMONT, Fla.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team extended its winning streak to six games after defeating Grace (Ind.) College, 10-2, and Carlow (Pa.) University, 5-3, to open PFX the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
Faith Barden (FR/Coleman, Mich.) started in the circle and pitched for two and two-third innings of the second game. Barden allowed two runs off two hits and four walks. She struck out four of the eight batters she faced. Sydney Coe (SO/Napoleon, Mich.) toed the rubber for the Blue Devils during two and one-third innings in which she struck out four of the 10 batters she faced and allowed one run off three hits and one walk. Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week Alexa Cherney (JR/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) pitched for the last two innings, allowing no runs and no hits, striking out four of six batters. Coe earned the win while Cherney recorded the save.
Andra Malburg (SO/Maineville, Ohio) led the Blue Devils with two runs, while Kennedy Emmons (FR/Byron Center, Mich.), Alex Amos (JR/Corona, Calif.), and Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.) pitched in with one each. Gina Barber (SO/Canton, Mich.), Emmons, and Brittany Wieland (SO/Alexandria, Va.) drove in one run each off one hit. Banas contributed with one RBI as well. Amos paced the squad with 11 putouts.
Lawrence Tech (6-0, 0-0) took the lead at the top of the second inning by scoring four runs and pushed it to five in the third inning. Carlow (4-5, 0-0) tried building a comeback in the following two innings, scoring three runs off two home runs. This would not be enough, as LTU shut down the Celtics in sixth and seventh innings to hold on to a 5-3 win.
In the first game, Brittney Bult (JR/Brampton, Ontario) pitched for the Blue Devils for three and third innings, during which she stuck out two batters and allowed three hits and no runs. Sydney Schultz (JR/Commerce Twp, Mich.) pitched in relief of Bult for two and two-third innings, in which she allowed two runs off two hits. Schultz walked one batter and struck out one.
Bailey Brown (JR/Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) and Katie Cyster (SO/Wyandotte, Mich.) paced the team with two runs each. In addition, Jackie Mattingly (JR/Chino Hills, Calif.), Banas, Sarah Hige (FR/Northville, Mich.), Meredith Adams (JR/Portage, Mich. ), Emmons, and Wieland contributed with one run apiece. Lawrence Tech collected 11 hits, led by Cyster with three out of four at-bats. Wieland paced the Blue Devils with five putouts.
Neither team was able to find an edge over the first three innings of the game, heading to the fourth knotted at zero. Lawrence Tech exploded for six runs at the bottom of the fourth inning. Adams homered for the Blue Devils in the fifth inning to push the lead to 7-0. Grace (4-8, 0-0) reduced the deficit to five runs in the sixth. However, Lawrence Tech struck back in the bottom of the inning with three runs to set the final score, 10-2.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Sunday, March 10 when they face off with Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) University at 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
