SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University athletic department announces the addition of Men's and Women's Track and Field starting in 2019-20, athletic director Scott Trudeau announced on Monday. The program will be independent in 2019-20 and transition to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) in 2020-21.
The Blue Devils will offer both indoor and outdoor track and field teams to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The team will be led by three coaches, current cross country head coach Eric Green, current men's basketball assistant Joe Lightfoot, and current football defensive line coach Mike Davis.
"We are excited for this opportunity to bring in new student-athletes to compete in men's and women's track and field," Scott Trudeau said. "We are looking to add 80-100 student-athletes and we know that coach Green, coach Lightfoot, and coach Davis will recruit the best students for our institution."
Track and Field will compete in both indoor and outdoor track and field. Indoor track and field is a winter sport, ending in March with outdoor starting in March and running into May.
"The addition of track and field is exciting as we look to continue our growth at the university," Green said. "We are looking forward to recruiting for track and field and have already seen interest from student-athletes who are excited to be part of this new program. Coach Lightfoot, Coach Davis, and I are excited to hit the road for LTU track and field."
