Blue Devils Set to Host Quarterfinals of WHAC Tournament vs. Aquinas (Mich.) College.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's soccer team will be entering post season play this Saturday. With a conference record of 6-5, the Blue Devils qualified for the WHAC tournament as the No. 4 seed for the second year in a row. They will host the Saints of Aquinas College who qualified as the No. 5 seed. The quarterfinal match is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm inside Blue Devil Stadium on Saturday, November 9th.

The Blue Devils and Saints met in Grand Rapids, Mich. on October 5th. This road match for the Blue Devils proved to be a tough test, but a strong second half allowed the Blue Devils to capture a 2-0 victory.

In the first half of the regular season matchup, neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. The Blue Devils were able to out shoot the Saints 8-3, but none of these shots found their way to the back of the net. Nico Rodriguez lead the Blue Devils in shots with three, and one was on goal. Max Jewett faced two shots on goal in the first half but was able to turn both of these scoring opportunities away.

The second half saw the Blue Devils pull away to capture the win. Fast forwarding to the 63rd minute, Juan Jaramillo lined up for a corner kick and got it just high enough for Kevin Wright to head the ball past the Saints' keeper to score his fourth goal of the season. This gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead and it did not take much longer for this lead to grow. Saints' goalkeeper was given a yellow card in the 65th minute, and this allowed the Blue Devils to take a penalty kick. Jaramillo was the Blue Devil selected for the penalty kick, and he was able to capitalize on the opportunity, giving the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.

It was another complete game by the Blue Devils who dominated in every statistical category. They outshot the Saints 26-7, allowed zero shots on goal in the second half, and had the ball down in Saints' territory the entire match.

The Blue Devils were able to take care of the Saints in their first meeting of the season, but they understand it will take a complete game to defeat the Saints for a second time this season. The Blue Devils will be aiming to win back to back WHAC tournaments. In 2018, the Blue Devils defeated Cornerstone (Mich.) University 2-1 in the quarterfinals. After defeating the Golden Eagles, the Blue Devils had to go on the road to take on the No. 1 seeded Crusaders of Madonna (Mich.) University. An early second half goal gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 upset. In the finals, the Blue Devils were once again on the road. This time, they traveled to Indiana Tech. University and defeated the Warriors 3-0 and claimed their first ever WHAC Tournament Championship.
