MARION, Ind. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's soccer team fell to Indiana Wesleyan University 4-2 on Wednesday in Marion, Ind.
Lawrence Tech (0-2) fell behind early as Filipe Mendonca got the first goal of the game for the Wildcats, making it 1-0 in the 14th minute. Phillip Basara gave Indiana Wesleyan a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute to push the lead to 2-0. Mendonca scored his second of the night, making it 3-0 in the 34th minute.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 4-1 as Mendonca secured his hat trick for IWU in the opening minute of the second half. The Blue Devils didn't wilt, as Jaccob Sooy cut the lead to 4-2 in the 72nd minute off an Adrian Milling assist.
Ryan Resendes had a couple of opportunities in the final 12 minutes, but IWU was able to hold off the Blue Devils for the win. Max Jewett got the start in net for Lawrence Tech, making six saves on 10 shots, playing all 90 minutes. Nico Rodriguez-Bermejo finished the game with two shots on goal as the Blue Devils finished the game with nine shots on goal.
The Blue Devils travel to Rio Grande, Ohio on Saturday, August 31 for a rematch of the 2018 NAIA Opening Round matchup against No. 5 Rio Grande (Ohio). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
