PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill.—The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's basketball team (3-1) dropped their first game of the season at the 2019 Trinity Christian Troll Classic to St. Xavier (Ill.) College (3-0). A tough first half for the Blue Devils proved to be the difference maker in the game, and the Blue Devils could not make-up the large deficit in the second half. The game ended with the Blue Devils scoring 63 and the Cougars 76.
The first half remained close for the first five minutes, but the Blue Devil shooters struggled to make shots and the Cougars were able to go on a little run. Over the next six minutes, Cougars outscored the Blue Devils 18-6. The Blue Devils were behind 12-25 with 9:24 left to play. The largest lead of the half was 24 by the Cougars with four minutes left to play. The Blue Devils were able to cut the lead to 17 before the half was over, 25-42.
Down 17 to start the second half, the Blue Devils needed to score and score fast. Both teams were trading buckets for much of the half, but the Blue Devils were able to cut the lead to nine points. Time was not on their side, and they found rhythm just a little too late.
Leading the Blue Devils with 14 points each were Brandon Beavers and Gunnar Gustafson. Also scoring in the double digits was Jordan Henry, who provided 11 points off the bench. As a team, the Blue Devils shot 41% from the field, and just under 27% from three point range.
They will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season tomorrow, Saturday, November 9th. It will be a game vs. the host college, Trinity Christian (Ill.) University, at 3:00pm.
