LIVONIA, Mich.—The Lawrence Technological University (2-0) men's basketball team defeated the Lakers of Roosevelt (Ill.) University in game one of the 2019 Bernie Holowicki Classic by a score of 83-67. It was a game dominated from start to finish for the Blue Devils who never trailed in the game.
The Blue Devils got out to a hot start and went on a 13-4 run to start the game. Their lead grew to as large as 13 at one point. The half came to an end with the Blue Devils ahead 39-28. Gunnar Gustafson led all Blue Devils in the first half with 10 points. Off the bench, Jordan Henry scored eight points.
The Blue Devils and Lakers traded buckets early on in the second half. The Lakers were able to cut the lead down single digits, 43-36, with 16:29 left in the half. Up only seven points, the Blue Devils turned on the offense and went up by 20 points, 72-52, over the next ten minutes. This would be the largest Blue Devil lead of the night, and they cruised to an 83-67. Isaiah Cumberland led the Blue Devils in scoring in the second half with 15 points, shooting 50% from the field.
Leading all Blue Devils was Cumberland with 21 points, thanks to the strong 15 point second half. Right behind him was Gustafson with 18 points. Gustafson shot 80% from the field, drilling eight of his 10 shots. Cumberland pulled down the most boards with six.
Up next for the Blue Devils is a Saturday afternoon game vs. the Bearcats of Brescia. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm at Madonna (Mich.) University located in Livonia.
