SOUTHFIELD, Michigan - Head football coach Jeff Duvendeck welcomes the signing class of 2019 to Lawrence Technological University. The Blue Devils have inked 35 as of Thursday, February 8, to the #19Nite class.
Of the 35 that have signed to continue both their educational and athletic careers at Lawrence Tech, 31 hail from the state of Michigan.
"We are just excited," said Duvendeck. "This is a long process that starts last February, and Thursday we will start on next year's class, the 2020 class, so it is a lot of work that our coaches and players put in.
To see all these kids be able to celebrate their decision to come here (Lawrence Tech), be a part of this program and help us build this into the legacy it is going to be is exciting. "
The offensive line and linebacker corps saw the most attention from this season's recruiting effort, as the Blue Devils are bringing in eight and seven, respectively, at the positions.
"We needed depth and we needed size on our offensive line so we added both of those," Duvendeck said. "We are looking to add one or two on the defensive side of the ball still. We feel our group coming back is phenomenal, as well."
Four members of this year's recruiting class are coming off Michigan High School Athletic Association state championships - Curtis Maxwell & Charles Stuart (Detroit King), Jayson Tunstall (New Lothrop) and Courtney McGarity (Chippewa Valley).
"It's been a whirlwind, honestly," said Tunstall. "It has been a dream of mine to play college football, so to be able to is amazing. My coaches always believed in me that I could do it. I never really believed it myself as much as they hoped I would, but this season, winning a state championship, really boosted my confidence, and here I am doing it."
On Saturday, February 2, Lawrence Tech's staff hosted its second LTU Signing Day Event on the Southfield campus. Twenty six members of the #19Nite class came and were introduced in front of friends and family. The newest Blue Devils were able to sit down with the LTU Coaches Show, pose in their new jerseys and interact with the current team.
The staff expects to continue adding to this year's recruiting class in the coming weeks.
The position breakdown through Feb. 8 is as follows:
Offensive Line: 8
Wide Receiver: 4
Defensive Back: 4
Running Back: 3
Defensive Line: 2
Swoll Back: 1
