Fannon, Walkowiak Combine for Seven RBI as Blue Devils Bullpen Secure 17-8 Win over NCAA DII Saginaw Valley

SAGINAW, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team defeated NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) University 17-8 on Wednesday night in Saginaw, Mich.

Lawrence Tech (27-11) opened the game down 2-0 after the second innings, but a three-run third put the Blue Devils up 3-2. Nick Allen scored on Jared Roth's RBI single through the left side to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sean Fannon followed with an RBI single to score Eddie Dopkowski, tying the game at 2-2. Jackson Walkowiak made it 3-2 after an RBI groudout to short that scored Roth to put the Blue Devils up 3-2.

Saginaw Valley (13-14-1) responded in the bottom of the third with four runs to take a 6-3 lead on Lawrence Tech. The Blue Devils started Matt Blunk on the mound and he went one inning followed by Caleb Homan came in to pitch the second, giving up a pair of runs before giving way to Matt Baker in the third inning. Baker went two-thirds of an inning allowing four runs – one earned – on one hit. Harvey Freed closed the third inning and pitched the fourth giving up a pair of runs on three hits as Saginaw Valley went into the sixth up 8-4.

The Cardinals went with starter Alex Millhisler to start as he went 5.1 innings allowing six runs – five earned – on nine hits. In the sixth inning, the Blue Devils finally got to Millhisler as Walkowiak opened the inning with a double and scored on a Ryan Robinette RBI to start a 10-run sixth. The Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the seventh and ninth inning to secure the 17-8 win.

Alek Wietrzykowski earned the win for Lawrence Tech as he pitched the fifth inning allowing no hits and giving up no runs with strikeouts. Simon Lidwell saw his first action of the spring, taking the sixth inning followed by Ben Schmidt, Jay Gallant, and David Klug. The final four pitchers gave up just two hits and no runs to secure the win for Lawrence Tech.

The Blue Devils return to the diamond on Saturday, April 13 as they take on Cleary (Mich.) University at Jimmy John's Field for a pair of games in Utica, Mich.
