UTICA, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team defeated Aquinas (Mich.) University 5-3 in game one and 5-2 in game two at Jimmy John's Field on Monday afternoon.
Lawrence Tech (21-9, 3-2) started Matt Blunk on the mound and he went nine innings, pitching the complete game to earn the win. He got through the first two innings with ease, but trouble found him in the top of the third inning when an error scored a pair of runs to make it 2-0 after three. Max Cadman gave Lawrence Tech their first run with an RBI single to center field to score Ryan Robinette.
Nate Hughes gave Aquinas (7-16, 2-3) a 3-1 lead with a homerun to keft field, but that is all Blunk would give up in the game. He shut the Saints down in order in the seventh and eighth as the Blue Devils gave him run support in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth inning. Lawrence Tech's Jared Roth scored the first run of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Cleasby's fielder's choice led to a throwing error by Aquinas that scored Robinette, tying the game at 3-3.
In the eighth inning, Jackson Walkowiak's RBI single to left center scored Sean Fannon to give the Blue Devils a 4-3 lead. Robinette scored Mansfield with a suicide squeeze to give Lawrence Tech a 5-3 lead. Blunk closed the game out after giving up a two-out single, but go Arnold to line out to Roth to earn his fifth win of the season.
Fannon finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored while Robinette went 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI, and a sacrifice.
The Blue Devils sent Alek Wietryzkowski to the mound in game two as he enters the game with a 4.15 ERA. Lawrence Tech gave Wietryzkowski a 1-0 lead on Robinette's RBI groundout who scored Walkowiak. Aquinas answered with a run in the top of the third and took the lead in the top of the fourth off an LTU error, taking a 2-1 lead.
The Blue Devils added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead on the Saints. Grizzell's sacrifice fly scored Walkowiak to tie the game at 2-2. Robinette stole home to give Lawrence Tech the 3-2 lead with Dopkowski making it 4-2 off Harry Storch's RBI double.
Lawrence Tech added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-2 lead off a Fannon RBI single. Wietryzkowski went nine innings allowing two runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts including the final putout, a grounder to the pitcher.
Walkowiak finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of runs. Dopkowski went 1-for-3 with two runs scored while Fannon added an RBI and a walk.
The Blue Devils are back on the diamond Wednesday, April 3 when they travel to Cornerstone (Mich.) University for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich.
