UTICA, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team won the opening game 6-5 over Roosevelt (Ill.) University. The Blue Devils won game two 13-2 to finish the four-game sweep of Roosevelt to open the 2018-19 season.
Lawrence Tech (4-0) Matt Blunk took the mound in game three of the four-game series with Roosevelt, pitching 5.1 innings allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits with three strikeouts. Blunk got into trouble in the third inning, loading the bases with no outs but was able to get out the jam with a foul out and a pair of strikeouts.
The Blue Devils took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Logan Grizzell scored Tyler Childs and Nathan Picchioni to give LTU a 2-0 lead. Eddie Dopkowski scored Grizzell on an RBI single and Brian Corbett pushed the Blue Devils lead to four runs.
Roosevelt (0-4) got on the board in the top of the sixth inning as Zeese's RBI single scored Taylor to cut the lead to 4-1. Kyle Wolter came in to relieve Blunk with one out and runners on first and second. The Lakers added a second run as Lentini's fielder's choice scored Fox to make it a 4-2 game.
Lawrence Tech responded in the bottom of the sixth with a pair runs as Childs RBI double scored Sean Marshall to give LTU a 5-2 lead. Pinch hitting for Tyler Cleasby, Ryan Robinettegot an RBI single to score Childs and push the Blue Devils lead to 6-2.
In the top of the seventh inning, Roosevelt led off with a walk before Wolter got Coleman to strikeout and Taylor to pop out to shortstop. He walked Lunatto to put runners on first and second and gave up an RBI double to Hutchinson to score Kozlak and make it 6-3. David Klug came into the game for Wolter with two outs and runners on second and third. Zeese followed with a double to left field to score Fox and Lunatto to make it a one run game, 6-5. Klug got the final batter looking at a strike to earn the save.
Childs finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Grizzell went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
In game two, Caleb Homan got the start for Lawrence Tech and breezed through the first three innings allowing one hit, two walks and four strikeouts. Homan got some early help as Fannon doubled in Allen and Corbett reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Fannon to give Lawrence Tech a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Homan made it through the fourth inning with a strikeout as the offense gave him two more runs in the bottom of inning. Corbett made it 3-0 on an RBI single scoring Dopkowski followed by Robinette with an RBI single to left field that scored Allen, making it 4-0.
Lawrence Tech added two runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning to take a 9-1 lead on the Lakers. They added four more runs in the sixth inning to make it a 13-1 lead with Homan earning the complete game win with 11 strikeouts while giving up just three hits and two runs.
Dopkowski finished the game with three runs scored, a walk and an RBI. Vandergroden went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
