UTICA, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team defeated UM-Dearborn 11-3 on Sunday afternoon at Jimmy John's Field in Utica, Mich to complete the weekend sweep. It is the second series sweep in program history.
Lawrence Tech (6-3, 6-3) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after an UM-Dearborn throwing error. The Blue Devils added a second run in the fourth inning on a Tyler Cleasby (SO/Commerce, Mich.)'s infield single that scored Logan Grizzell (SO/Colorado Springs, Colo.) to give LTU a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines added two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
Alek Wietrzykowski (FR/Toledo, Ohio) started on the mound for Lawrence Tech and went seven innings with five strikeouts and two runs allowed with four hits.
UM-Dearborn (0-8, 0-8) gave up a two-run bomb to Sean Fannon (SO/Grosse Pointe, Mich.), his third homerun of the weekend, to give Lawrence Tech a 4-2 lead after five innings. The Blue Devils added three runs in the seventh inning as Jackson Walkowiak (FR/Grosse Pointe, MI) walked with the bases loaded to score Austin King (SR/Davison, Mich.) and push the lead to 5-2.
Max Cadman (SO/Hartland, Mich.) followed with a two RBI double to right field to give LTU a 7-2 lead with Ryan Robinette (SO/Midland, Mich.) and Logan Barker (FR/Chatham, VA) scoring for the Blue Devils. Dopkowski followed with a walk to score Walkowiak and push the lead to 8-2.
Simon Lidwell (SO/Sterling Heights, Mich.) came into the game in the eighth inning to get the final out to preserve the six run lead. The Blue Devils added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-2 lead. Walkowiak's RBI single made it 9-2 with Cadman's ground out plating King to give LTU the 10-2 lead. Dopkowski's single to right scored Robinette to make it 11-2. The Wolverines added a run in the top of the ninth to make it 11-3.
Lawrence Tech offense was led by Walkowiak with a 4-for-4 day with two RBIs and two runs scored including a double and a walk. Fannon added two RBIs with a homerun and a double. Cadman added three RBIs. Wietrzykowski won his first collegiate game in just his second start with Simon Lidwell, James Castiglione (SR/Fenton, Mich.), and Matt Baker (SO/Traverse City, Mich.) pitching the final two innings.
The fall baseball season is now over with action starting up in the spring. The 2018 spring schedule will be released later this month.
