LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team defeated University of Windsor in 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 37-35, 25-16) in Livonia, Mich. at the Madonna (Mich.) University Tournament.
Lawrence Tech (7-4, 1-0) lost the opening set 25-22 before storming back and taking the next three sets to get the win. The Blue Devils went on to win the second set 25-13 as they rebounded after a lackluster first set that saw them commit nine attack errors.
The third set was a back-and-forth blockbuster with 22 ties as Lawrence Tech took the early 9-4 lead before Windsor made it 11-11. The Blue Devils retook the lead at 16-13 before the Lancers went on a quick 5-0 run to take an 18-16 lead.
Lawrence Tech tied it at 18 and took the lead at 21-19. Windsor battled back to tie it at 21 and that is when the back-and-forth really began. The teams tied 13 times from that moment with nine straight set points for Windsor before LTU took a 35-34 lead. All nine set points were met with kills by the Blue Devils to keep the set going. The Lancers found themselves down 35-34, but the Blue Devils lost the next point before closing the set out with a kill by freshman Isabella McDonald (FR/Farmington, Michigan).
Lawrence Tech took the next set to earn the win.
Briana Reum (SR/South Elgin, IL) led the team with 14 kills followed by Zakia Hunt (SO/Livonia, Mich.) and Varvara Gromakova (SO/Moscow, Russia) with 11 kills each. All three played pivotal rolls in the third set, combining for seven kills. Kristi Doherty (SO/Davison, Mich.) finished the game with 50 assists and 24 digs to go with eight kills. McDonald added seven kills, while Alisha Stidam (SR/Barrie, Ontario CAN) and Dacey Cook (JR/Potterville, Mich.) added six kills each.
Lawrence Tech is back on the court Saturday, September 9 when they face Western Ontario at 10 a.m. in Livonia, Mich.
