DETROIT, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team fell to Wayne State (Mich.) University 6-5 on Wednesday night in Detroit, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (13-34) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, but responded with three runs in the top of the third inning. Max Cadman (FR/Hartland, Mich.) opened the inning with a single through the left side and scored on Tyler Childs (FR/Burt, Mich.) two-RBI single to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead. Brian Harris (JR/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) also scored in the inning as Ryan Robinette (FR/Midland, Mich.) moved him to second on a single to right field. Robinette scored on the pickoff of Childs to give LTU a 3-1 lead.
Matt Blunk (FR/Ann Arbor, Mich.) got the start on the mound, going two innings followed by Matt Baker (FR/Traverse City, Mich.) and Chris Burgess (JR/Grand Blanc, Mich.) each going one inning to hold the 3-2 lead on the Warriors. Simon Lidwell (FR/Sterling Heights, Mich.) pitched a clean fifth inning as he struck out two and got one to fly out to Harris in centerfield.
Michael Rinke (JR/Dryden, Mich.) reached scoring position in the top of the sixth inning, but was stranded as Wayne State was able to get a strikeout and a popup to end the inning. In the bottom of the sixth innings, James Castiglione (JR/Fenton, Mich.) came in and gave up three runs on three walks and a hits as the Warriors took a 5-3 lead on the Blue Devils.
Lawrence Tech answered right back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Harris reached on a single followed by a Robinette who reached on an error by the centerfield to put runners on first and second with one out.
Sean Fannon (FR/Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Rinke followed with back-to-back RBI singles to plate Harris and Robinette and tie the game at 5-5.
Wayne State (30-16) took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Warriors scored on an RBI double from Conti to go up 6-5. The Blue Devils went down in order in the ninth inning to end the game.
Childs led the team in RBIs with two while Cadman was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Harris added two runs while the Blue Devils left 11 runners on base.
Lawrence Tech wraps up the regular season with a three-game series against newest WHAC member Rochester (Mich.) College starting May 4 with a single game at 2 p.m. The two will wrap the series up on May 5 with a pair of games starting at 2 p.m.
